Publumwe grimaced. The blasted primitive longboat was swaying and jostling him horribly, making it truly difficult to read his new book. He had thought, from his brief skimming of Incident in Necrom in Jobasha's shop that it would be both informative and entertaining; but as it was he had no idea on either account because the blasted boat wouldn't stop rocking long enough for him to complete even a single sentence, much less take notes. He'd thought of asking the captain, a young Dunmer girl with the sea in her eyes and the wind in her hair, if she could do anything, but he'd reconsidered; these conditions were probably considered light for a boat of this type.

Sighing, he gave up, and stowed the book back in his leather pack, warded against the waves with a version of a water walking spell. He sat back, looking over the waves. The longboat threaded its way amongst the crowded seas of Azura's Coast; tall, rocky islands on all sides, tough stone spires diffusing the waves as they crashed against them, Red Mountain in the distance as always.

He supposed it was enjoyable, this sailing, as long as one didn't try to read while doing so. The air was pleasantly cool, the wind a brisk snap against the sails and through his drawn back hair. And the rocking didn't seem as bad anymore, somehow. Hmm. There were some thoughts to be had there about perception, but he had no time to think them now. As they rounded the horn of a small island, the glorious mushroom tower of Tel Branora swung into view.

Publumwe climbed out of the boat and onto Tel Branora's somewhat shabby and rickety wooden dock, paid and thanked the captain, and set off into the town proper. He'd come to Tel Branora specifically to consult a fellow, respected Altmer, Mollimo. As Mistress Therana was hardly secure in her mind any more, Mollimo handled most of her day to day affairs, as well as her financial and magical interests. As part of his work he kept track of both new and established members of the House. Publumwe had known him his whole life, and he hoped the older Altmer would be able to point him in the right direction.

On the gentle, rising curve of Tel Branora's main mushroom ramp, Publumwe paused and leaned back against the mushroom's rough, protective outer covering. The publican in the town's tavern had told him that Mollimo had been busy with some sort of magical project for Mistress Therana for the last few days, and that he'd consequently been spending most of his time up in his room in the guard tower, up above the rest of the town's distractions.

He looked out over the edge of the ramp, down to the waters lapping gently against the confines of the small, inland bay upon which the tower had been founded. He did hope that he wouldn't inconvenience Mollimo any by visiting so unanounced like this. It would not do to annoy his friend; then how should he learn what he needed to know?

He continued along the ramp, came to the door to the first level of the tower, and entered, stepping quietly down the stairs. He had to levitate to get to where the exit to the guard tower was, but had no troubles otherwise. He entered the guard tower tentatively, shutting the door softly behind him. He knew Mollimo's chamber was the one directly across from the entrance, and he crossed to it. Unfortunately, his door was closed, a nice door, thick, it seemed, well polished, with an artistic charred rendering of a robed wizard. He knocked.

BOOM!

A flash of brilliantly purple light flared around the door, shaking on its hinges, smoke streaming from its edges. From within the room came a thick stream of coughing curses, and footsteps approaching. It seemed that Publumwe was in for just the disaster he had wanted to avoid; no Altmer appreciated being interrupted in the middle of a magical experiment.

The door was wrenched open to reveal a smoke wreathed Altmer, robes smoldering, smudged about his face, energy laden hair floating around his head as though he stood underwater. Publumwe's jaw dropped. Well, this was certainly not going to be the best time to get Mollimo's opinion.

"Yes, Publumwe, do you want something?" Mollimo said, glowering.

"Oh, Mollimo! I'm sorry for interrupting you; I didn't sense any active magic so I assumed you weren't in the middle of something."

Mollimo sighed and shook his head, waves of hair wiggling. "The shield. Ahh, I forgot, the shield." He moved aside, beckoning to the smoke filled room. "Come along inside, then, it wasn't your fault you couldn't tell my experiment was at the critical point."

Publumwe entered the room, pinching his nose against the acrid smoke. "What exactly are you researching, anyway, Mollimo?"

The disheveled Altmer closed the door with a sharp snap and bustled around the room, pushing the two small windows open and waving the smoke out over the town.

"Therana," he threw over his shoulder, "wants better magical traps for the vaults in the dungeons. And she commissioned me to do the work, though I've a thousand other things to see to around here."

Ah. He must have been searching for a less fallible method of triggering when Publumwe knocked, then, and not messing about with destructive effects, otherwise he supposed he would have had the foresight to cast silencing spells around his room. A magical trap was an intricate thing to create, Publumwe knew, and especially so if it was to withstand experienced magical 'picking'.

"Is your research coming well, then, apart from me interrupting you?" he asked, peering through the thinning smoke.

"Yes, yes, very well," Mollimo said, beckoning Publumwe to a small table and sitting in one of the two chairs around it, "I was just finalizing the optimized trespass detection and trigger design. You just surprised me, and I triggered the placeholder trap effects accidentally."

Publumwe nodded understandingly. That did make sense, after all. At least it was just a weak trap, and not the real thing. Could've killed his friend, couldn't he?

"Well, is there anything in particular you came by for, Publumwe, or did you just want to see how much damage you could cause?" He grinned, to soften the words.

"Yes, actually. I'm looking for something."

Mollimo frowned in contemplation. "What, exactly?"

Ah, he had said someTHING, hadn't he? "Well, not a thing, in truth. A person. I need to know who in House Telvanni knows the most about the magicks of Illusion."

Mollimo grinned in sudden understanding and leaned back in his chair.

"I see! A quest for knowledge, then. Well, there are several Telvanni exceptionally proficient with illusions, but they all have their specialities. Is there anything specific that you need to know?"

He nodded. "I want to know about calming and controlling individuals."

Mollimo's eyes turned sharp and surprised. "Calming and controlling. Well. I must admit, I never thought that you would seek out that branch of magic, Publumwe." He stared at Publumwe hard, reevaluating him, and then relaxed. "Who you want is an old, old hermit, a Dunmer called Enarvyne. He lives up on one of the islands in Sheogorad, by Ald Redaynia."

He'd need at least another day, at the least, for the boat ride that far north, and then a good day and a half to two days to find Enarvyne and convince him to instruct him. Interesting, though, that it should be a hermit...and that Mollimo should know of him.

"Isn't a hermit a little backwater for you to be keeping track of, Mollimo?"

Mollimo snorted. "He hasn't always been a hermit. He was a promising young Dunmer once, pegged to be the next Archmagister, till he banished himself to the wilds. He moves around every few years, but believe me, it is still worth my efforts to keep track of him."

"He banished himself? A Telvanni?" Publumwe said, gaping.

"Yes, well," said Mollimo, chuckling, "his parents were Redoran."

Interesting...very interesting. Publumwe was looking forward to meeting this Dunmer, especially if he could teach him what he needed to know. He stood, eager to get at it.

"Well, Mollimo, thanks for all your assistance, and I'm sorry again about knocking when I did."

He waved away Publumwe's apologies casually and said, "Oh, think nothing of it. It wasn't your fault anyway."

Publumwe smiled and waved farewell as he walked to the door. Mollimo's voice stopped him as he laid his hand on the handle, and he looked back.

"Publumwe. Be careful with this one. Be sure your thoughts are what you think they are."

He held his gaze for a second, then nodded.

"I will."

And he left, shutting the door quietly behind him and striding purposefully out of the tower, out of the town, back to the boat.
